First Tooth!

What a fun and magical time of life...when you loose your first tooth!

Fun...because it is one of your first big milestones of life...passing from wee child to the beginning stages of adulthood...and not that we want children to grow up too fast-we all know that there are many, many stages into adulthood!

Magical...well what more can I say- the Tooth Fairie!
So when I got the call from Frances..."Auntie Leslie, I think it's time, my tooth is so very wiggly!" We had been watching this wiggly tooth for many weeks!

Armed with a Q-tip, Abesol, a a couple of 2x2 gauzes (and 14 years of working in dentistry) I set off to put this little tooth into the reach of that Tooth Fairie!

After couple tries...POP! out it came and right into her little porcelain tooth fairie porcelain box!

What an honor to help Frances with her first tooth!..and more importantly, I came out on her Papa's 50 birthday!!

So like a good dental person- salt water rinses where in order!
After looking in the mirror and jumping around with excitement...Frances settled down to ponder a more important question..."Mama- who is the Tooth Fairie's fairie??"

So with a bit of quick thinking and the help of that ever popular internet...Auntie Leslie?

The Tooth Fairie has always been and will always be. She has always been a fairie and has never lost any of her own teeth. Some believe that is why she loves collecting them!

Where does the Tooth Fairie come from?

"No one really knows how fairies originated unless it's the fairies themselves, and they're not telling. What we do know is that tales of the fairies can be found on every continent around the globe.Theosophist, Edward Garner, argued that fairies are allied to the butterfly genus, and are made of a substance lighter than gas which renders them invisible to human beings (except clairvoyants). "

"What does the tooth fairy do with all those teeth?

They're just collected, neatly labeled and filed away in a museum-like castle."

Some things are magical even without the tooth fairie...
or maybe she was there!?!?

The Phoenix has landed...

My niece Mallory has been applying to med schools. It is a very very competitive endeavor and I believe sometimes can bring a roller coaster of emotions. Being one who has the OSS gene (older sister syndrome)...I can so relate to the self-competitiveness of her process. My goal was to help support her through this as much a possible.

2012 came and so entered the Chinese year of the Dragon...specifically the Water Dragon. I told Mal, that this was her year and like water, she would be able to find her way through all obstacles to achieve her goal...and she did just that and was excepted to a fabulous PA school- just the right fit!

So when it came time for her send off party, I wanted to get her a dragon to take with her. I went to my local Chinese gift store and asked for help from the Chinese owner. I want a water dragon for my niece who is going away to school...her reply...she is female? then you must get a Phoenix to give her balance!
Throughout Asia, the Chinese Dragon is a symbol of mythical rulers of the time, rain, water, happiness, health. The Dragon is a symbol of the wisdom, intelligence, enlightenment, energy, leadership, good fortune, optimism, and success.  The Dragon is male.
The Phoenix is well-known mythological creature. In many ancient cultures it has been regarded with great awe, as a fabulous bird of good fortune. Rising from the ashes to live again and again, the phoenix represents new life, resurrection, and inspires hope in us all. The Phoenix is female.

Together they are the yin and yang- the balance.
So..being the OSS Aunt that I am...I could not let her go off without balance...and I found (what I think is) a fabulous set of the Dragon and the Phoenix! ( and yes, Uncle Mark gave her cash...)
So here is the kicker...when I was writing about the relationship between the Dragon and the Phoenix...it hit me...Mal was excepted in the year of the Dragon and she will be going to school in Phoenix....
hummm- makes you think doesn't it!?!? timing IS everything!

Our hearts go with her and we know that she will be a super star and do well!
We love you Mal!
